Bob's Red Mill, Milwaukie

The concept is unique. Using old-world technology, a company based in Milwaukie has developed a new age revival in healthy, natural foods. Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods produces, as they say, whole grain foods for every meal of the day. The products are gaining a terrific reputation in national health and cooking publications as customers clamor for more.

Founded by Bob and Charlee Moore in 1978, the company is dedicated to giving consumers simple, unrefined wholesome whole-grain foods that are low in cost, and high in nutrition and fiber.

Bob and Charlee actually got started in California, with no idea how things would end up. The Moores migrated north and found an historic site for the first Bob's Red Mill near Oregon City. While the first employees were being assembled, Bob began searching the world for old millstones, believing that the centuries-old way of grinding the grains made for a better product. Some of the stones actually came from old, derelict mills in Eastern Oregon. In the early days, the company only aspired to serve the local community. But an arson fire led to the mill's destruction. A new site and rebuilt operation also spawned a larger vision of what could be. Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods now employs more than 130 people and an expanded operating and manufacturing facility. Operating without a break, the mill grinds thousands of pounds of product each day.

Now hundreds of products can be found in grocery and natural food stores throughout the United States and Canada. The products are also available by mail order and online. The slow grinding of such grains as oats, barley, rice, wheat, rye, and some uncommon grains produces flour for many wholesome meals. Baking mixes, cereals, and specialty ingredients are all offered with the same guarantee of health and flavor.

A special gluten-free line is dedicated to those with wheat allergies or intolerance. In-house testing guarantees the product meets special standards. Bob's Red Mill is certified as an organic processor and is Kosher certified. The company has also been an active participant in trade missions and seminars overseas organized by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Bob's Red Mill has been a great example of what strategic and dedicated sales and marketing can do for an Oregon company.

On the 25th anniversary of Bob's Red Mill, a new Whole Grain Store and Visitors Center opened in Milwaukie, offering a retail outlet, bakery, restaurant, classes, and even historical displays.

Bob Moore remains very active in the day-to-day operation. With his trademark touring cap and bolo tie, he is not about to slow down. The company keeps grinding out the products just as the millstones grind the grain the way it was done centuries before. With a dedicated staff and continued growth in the marketplace, Bob and Charlee Moore have a right to be proud of what they've accomplished.
