Bob and Jean
Nixon, Junction City
If you were to ask
for a model couple who exemplify what successful Oregon
agriculture is about, you probably wouldn’t get any better
example than Bob and Jean Nixon– partners in their 35,000 acre
farm near Junction City and partners in life. Each has made
individual contributions to the industry, enough for each to
garner several past awards and honors. But collectively, they
have left an indelible mark on the landscape of farming in
Oregon.
Bob and Jean Nixon
were both raised in Central Oregon. Jean once said she would
never marry a farmer. Bob grew up farming with his Dad before
striking out on his own shortly after he married Jean. The year
was 1945. The Nixons started out with very little, but the land
that they both worked eventually rewarded them with a diversity
of crops.
The Nixons have
grown wheat, mint, sugar beets, clover, grass seed, various
vegetables, and livestock. But it has been their association
with various ag organizations and causes that make them stand
out.
Bob and Jean were
among the first inductees into the Oregon Farm Hall of Fame at
Oregon State University. In receiving a distinguished service
award from OSU in 1982, Bob was praised as being one of the
innovative and progressive farmers who have harmonized farming
and business operations to the benefit of millions of producers.
Bob was appointed and served two terms on the State Board of
Agriculture. His list of service and accomplishments is long–
Chair of the Oregon Wheat Commission and Oregon Seed Growers
League, Agri Business Council of Oregon President, and board
member of the national agri-business council. Bob also
participated in the OSUs Foundation Board and, as father of two
girls, is active in Junction City Schools.
Perhaps the only
one who can match his list of accomplishments is Jean. As a
businesswoman, Jean took an active role in running the farming
operation. She also served on the Wheat Commission, the Oregon
Seed Council, the E.R Jackman Foundation Board, Tri County Bank
Board, and on a Governor’s Energy Committee.
The Nixons have
also traveled extensively, not necessarily for rest and
relaxation. Jean has worked a plow in Mexico to get a feel for
the challenges of farming south of the border. They have
examined wheat in other countries, offering their own valuable
insight. Bob has been able to see farming operations in the
Ukraine. He is also known for his friendliness to others while
on the road. The Nixons have taken their gracious ways to many
countries and have always returned with the same spirit of
adventure and accomplishment that has marked their many years of
marriage. Anyone who has known the Nixons has known the true
meaning of Oregon agriculture.
